Learn more about cloud migration
Cloud migration is attracting more and more businesses every day because of the cost savings without performance sacrifices. Migrating your on-premise data warehouse to the cloud gives you the performance and scalability you need to meet ever changing and growing demands.
Many companies have built — and still do build — data pipeline infrastructure "in-house". But with cloud computing, you can let the experts handle the hard parts. Plus, by saving yourself the effort and difficulty of developing and maintaining your own data pipeline infrastructure and services, you gain productivity. Your employees are free to work on what really matters to your business.
Modern cloud services maximize operational resiliency by ensuring that your data is still accessible, even when your infrastructure isn't. Further, with a cloud-based infrastructure, your security is more likely to be the best-in-class, and compliant with the most stringent security requirements demanded by healthcare, financial, and government institutions.
Security is a concern during and after migration, because there are risks associated with not having total ownership and control over your data. What's more, sensitive data is often subject to compliance requirements, which can be hard to support, especially during the migration process. Plus, there are internal security procedures which need to be updated.
Migration/Integration complexity may be the biggest pain point for large enterprises with existing infrastructures. A startup can design itself around cloud services from the get-go; but with a large existing infrastructure — including the web of dependencies to navigate and the process itself — this can be daunting. This lack of internal process applies to the migration process itself as well as afterwards: your IT staff must be retrained, and processes documented.
During the preparation/planning phase, stakeholders agree on objectives, and a case is made for ROI (and other advantages). Once signed off, a cloud service provider is chosen, and early steps are undertaken. You must assess your IT portfolio, application dependencies, and the impact that your migration to the cloud will have on them.
Industry experts refer to the next phases as design, migrate, and validate. Otherwise known as The 6Rs, they include:
Replatform/Rehost: referred to respectively as "lift, tinker, and shift" or "lift and shift", these steps involve migrating applications to the cloud with or without minor alteration.
Repurchase: this involves moving from one proprietary product to another to reduce costs or enable feature upgrades.
Refactor: migrating to the cloud provides an excellent opportunity to refactor your code for efficiency, or to improve the way data is architected, developed, and consumed.
Retire: if some software has outlived its usefulness, you can turn it off and move on.
Retain: however, if things are working just fine, why not keep them?
You're far more likely to be satisfied with your cloud data pipeline as a service if:
You can save money, set up flexibly, and remove complexity from your data store while you securely migrate everything.
Your cloud data pipeline provider understands the 6Rs, and can assist and advise you in a full migration process.
